Peripheral neuropathy is a widespread condition th

Peripheral neuropathy is a widespread condition that causes abnormal sensation, pain, and muscle dysfunction.
Many of the most common causes of peripheral neuropathy cannot be fully treated, but it is possible to alleviate some of the symptoms and prevent the original cause of neuropathy.
How do we do that? Exercise!
Routine exercise has a myriad of benefits. It improves cardiovascular health and reduces the risk of developing diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome. For those with diabetes, this study shows nerve damage is less in those who routinely exercise. Exercise also reduces the formation of Amadori products and accumulation of AGEs, two contributors to neuropathic symptoms.

You have probably heard the phrase “no pain, no gain”. I often hear this phrase tossed around in the same breath as physical therapy. Some people think that PT needs to be painful in order for it to work. It’s true that physical therapists are going to make you work hard to get stronger and rehab successfully. Sometimes, muscle strengthening and stretching can cause some discomfort as we push the bounds to get stronger but in general physical therapy should not cause pain. If it does, physical therapists have the training and education to be able to modify exercises and routines to fit your specific needs and abilities. Fear of being in pain should not be a reason that you don’t give PT a try.
