Having trouble doing your PT exercises at home? Feeling like there is too much to do, or not enough time? Wondering if it’s all necessary!
First and foremost, talk with your physical therapist! We are on your team and it’s our job to make sure that our interventions are not only properly tailored to you and your specific needs and ability, but also that everyone is on the same page. If something feels too hard or too easy, that needs to be communicated between both parties.
Second, it helps to think of exercise as medicine. Just as when you go to the doctor’s office and receive a prescription for a pharmaceutical drug with specific dosage and frequency to take it, so does your physical therapist give you a prescription for exercise(s) with specific loads and frequencies to do it. If we get medicine from the doctor’s office and we don’t take it, we shouldn’t expect to get much better. So we can’t expect to get much different if we don’t do the PT exercises set out for us either!
